Is this the three masted schooner once owned by Jochen Mass the German race car driver.
I spent a year sailing on a three masted schooner in 1979 in the Mediterranean. I was travelling in Europe and landed a postion on Aquila Marina a three masted Schooner along with a English and New Zealand traveller. We all spent a year with the ship and we would have stayed longer if the ship was to cross the Atlantic. It wasn't the right time for the owners so the three of us departed and went our ways.
I would like to know if this is the same ship and if it is still sailing at his time.

I sailed briefly in this ship when she was used by the BBC in making The Onedin Line series. Brief, but one of my most fascinating times in a 20-year seafaring career! I'd really like to find a good photo of her...

I was involved with fitting out this ship
in Plymouth after she had finished on the
Onedin Line and sailed with her - intended
destination Monaco - but we had to turn
back to port because she was taking so
much water. I made some furniture for her
and some carving including a figurehead
which never got finished. I've got a few b
and w photos of her at that time and also
beached for repairs

Yes, she was owned by Jochen Mass, the Formula 1 car racer, and she was his pride and joy. As stated above by Werner Jurkowski, she ran aground on a shoal at the entrance of the river Weser in 1990 and was broken up by waves.

I sailed on the Aquila from Monaco to Quebec in
summer of 1984 as part of the crew (skipper was
Jason). Also participated in the
celebrations in Quebec for Jean Jacques Cartier
and the 1984 Tall ships race.
Beken of Cowes has a great photo in the st
Sad to see she has gone under.

I worked on this ship when she was based
in Martinique, 1980 I believe. I was very
young at the time and it remains a vivid
and cherished memory. I did the cooking
and remember Jochen asking me to boil up
a stingray for dinner. I was also very
sad to hear she had foundered.
