Last update: 25 Mar 2021

  • reconstruction of the galleon used by Sir Francis Drake for his circumnavigation of the globe from 1577 1580.
  • reproduced on the basis of historical data, shipbuilding norms of the time and numerous reports from the 16th century; there were no design plans available as ships at that time were built according to visual estimates and traditional rules.
  • the vessel was built for training purposes as a working exhibit for the Crowley Maritime Corporation in San Francisco , USA.
  • with only a few exceptions, the ship was constructed using building methods and materials of the former era, though she does have a steering wheel instead of the tiller or whip staff usual at that time.
  • 1979-80 circumnavigated the globe via Hawaii, Japan, Hongkong and the Mediterranean, returning to England by passing through the Panama and Suez Canals.
  • today berthed in the St. Mary Overie Dock, London; open for public visits.
  • 2004 foundation of the Golden Hinde Educational Trust by local businesses and residents, who wished to keep the ship in Southwark, London.
  • since 2017 ongoing conservation work whilst the ship remains open to the public, completely funded by visitor admissions and private hires.
