- built in Hobart in 1995 totally by volunteers and with the support of many sponsors.
- operated by a registered charity, the Windeward Bound Trust as a sail-training vessel for Tasmanians and Australians.
- 2002-2003 "Windeward Bound" completed the Matthew Flinders Circumnavigation Voyage of Australia, celebrating the bicentennial of Matthew Flinders' voyage of discovery, during the voyage 200 years ago Flinders circumnavigated Australia on board of the "Investigator", producing a map of remarkable accuracy on which for the first time the word 'Australia' was provocatively inscribed.
- named after Mr. Lewis Winde, builder of an 1848 Boston schooner on which the Tasmanian vessel is modelled
