- commissioned 1798 to save American trade vessels in the Mediterranean agains pirates.
- she is the oldest ship which permanently swimms in the water, took an active part in the American Civil War, she is the American ship with the longest time in commission.
- 1802-05 in the Mediterranean to fight against pirates.
- 1805-12 as stationary ship in Washington, successful action in the War for Liberation of America against England, after that in the Mediterranean again until 1817.
- 1819-21 protection of the trade routes to South America and on the coast of Peru, 1825-26 active against Caribbean pirates.
- 1831 with political mission to England and France, after that in the Mediterranean again for the next 4 years.
- 1835 in the Gulf of Mexico, took actively part in the put down of the revolt by the Seminoles in Florida.
- 1840 start of a circumnavigation until 1844, flag ship of the East-Indian fleet, she saved the Sandwich Islands against a British annexation on her return to America.
- 1845-52 stationary ship in Norfolk.
- rebuilding and enlarge of the hull 1853.
- used in the Mediterranean for aditional 3 years, decommissioned in August 1858.
- laid up in Newport in poor condition when the WW II begun, nominated to the flag ship of the Atlantic fleet.
- 1955 officially decommissioned from her active service, restored by in Baltimore by the patriotic organisation "Star Spangled Banner Flag House Association of Baltimore".
- till 1994 completely rigged in the port of Baltimore, 1996 start of a complete restore.
