  • the first ocean-going armoured ship, she was put into service in 1861 and safeguarded peace purely through her existence, being head and shoulders above similar ships at that time in terms of her guns and equipment
  • due to rapid developments in the arms industry, she soon became obsolete
  • she was laid up in 1872 and, from 1875, served as a station ship in Portland before becoming a training ship
  • around 1900 she was broken up partially and then continued to be used as a training ship, workshop and tank platform
  • after being handed over to the Marine Trust in 1977, restoration of the vessel was commenced in 1978
  • she is now a museum ship in Portsmouth
