  • "Juan Sebastian de Elcano" is the Spanish navy's schoolship used for the training of cadets from the Naval Academy of Marín and as goodwill ambassador for her country.
  • designed and built by Echevarrieta y Larrinaga in Cadiz, SPA; the rig was designed by the English yacht designer and builder Camper & Nicholson's, keel laid in November 1925, launch in March 1927 and commissioned by the Spanish navy in August 1928.
  • frequently undertakes long voyages, e.g. on her maiden voyage she circumnavigated the globe and did so several times again.
  • she has taken part in many regattas, such as the 1976 American Bicentennial Tall Ships Race, the 1988 Australian bicentenary celebrations in Sydney and was the flag-ship at the Grand Columbus Regatta in 1992, she participated the Sail Osaka 1997 and sailed the Tall Ships 2000 race from Cadiz to Bermuda, took part in the OpSail 2000 events in various US ports.
  • one of the oldest schoolship currently in service but is maintained in top condition and was given major refits in 1956 and 1978.
  • won the International Sail Training Association's Boston Teapot Trophy for the best 124-hour run under sail of the year in 1974, 1979, 1997, 1999.
  • named after the seamen Juan Sebastian de Elcano (~1476-1526) who participated in the first circumnavigation of the globe by a fleet of 5 ships commanded by Ferdinand Magellan from 1519 to 1522, after the death of Magellan de Elcano took the command of what remained of the fleet and reached home with the "Victoria", the sole remaining ship.
