Portrait of the sailing ship:

Last update: 01 Oct 1998

The "Hiorten" replica was launched in June 1998 at the Swedish Naval Museum in Karlskrona; after interior fitting and rigging, the "Hiorten" will operate as a sailing mail boat on the shipping line service between Rostock and Karlskrona (joint project between the cities of Karlskrona and Rostock and their maritime museums); the "Hiorten" is a synonym for the revival of the traditional art of boatbuilding and the maintaining of old sailing ships in the Baltic region. A regatta has been named after her which takes place every year at the end of July from Karlskrona to Rostock. The ships that took part in the 2nd Hiorten Regatta in 1998 included the 4-masted bark "Sedov", the bark "Statsraad Lehmkuhl", the fully-rigged vessel "Khersones", the brig "Roald Amundsen" and 15 other traditional sailing ships; the original post yacht "Hiorten" was built in 1692 by the master shipbuilder of the Royal Admiralty, F.J. Sheldon, in the newly founded "Carls Crona". In May, she docked at Ystad with 15 persons. From 1692 to 1702 she ship transported post, freight and passengers between Ystad and Stralsund.
