Portrait of the sailing ship:

Last update: 30 Jun 2002

  • keel was laid by order of the Spanish Navy in 1946, the project started under the Name "Juan de Austria", the ship's completion was delayed by severe fire damage at the shipyard, she was eventually launched in 1953, completed afloat and put into service in 1954 for the Chilean Navy under the name "Esmeralda".
  • her sister ship is the "Juan Sebastian de Elcano", differences can be found in the rigging, with the front gaff sail replaced by numerous staysails, thus justifying her classification as a barkentine, other sails are rigged in a manner typical for schooners.
  • training ship for navy and merchant navigation and goodwill ambassador of her state, covers relatively long distances every year, frequently travelling the world and visiting Europe, North America and the Far East.
  • took part in the Tall Ships Race to New York in 1964 and 1976, the Osaka Sailing Festival in 1983, as well as the New York Operation Sail in 1986, the 1992 Columbus Regatta and the 1997 Hamburg harbour anniversary celebrations, and in Tall Ships 2000 events on the American Atlantic coast
  • the Chilean training ship was named after a vessel which had fought successfully against the opposing fleet during the salpeter war between Bolivia and Peru in 1879
