- built as a sailing 1-masted klipper at the shipyard De Toekomst in Delft in 1906, until the mid 1920s she exclusively sailed, then the first engine was fitted.
- since the beginning of the 1940s she was used as a motor freigher without masts and rigging until 1977.
- in 1977 converted to one of the first charter vessels, shorten of the hull by 8m, rigged as a ketch.
- further extensive rebuilding in 1993, she complies the todays standards of comfort and safety.
- named to honour the writer Arthur van Schendel (1874-1946), well-known for his descriptions of the Dutch sailing fleet in the turn of the 20th century.
