- built 1921 at the Hodgdon Brothers shipyard, East Boothbay, Maine, construction and design was carefully considered and well-executed because of her specialized purpose sailing Arctic waters.
- first crossed the Arctic Circle on August 23, 1921 under the command of Admiral Donald B. MacMillan, she sailed north with MacMillan two dozen times, carrying scientists, adventurers and students, she wintered over 3 times in the far north where she was frozen in the ice until 1954.
- during Word War II she served as Greenland patrol vessel in the US Navy.
- in June 1959 she was aquired by the Mystic Seaport museum.
- 1986 she was honored as Maine's official sailing vessel, since 1988 she has been the flagship of the Maine Maritime Academy's sail training fleet, offers a broad range of program in seamanship, ocean studies, and curriculum development.
- designated a National Historic Landmark in 1989.
- 1990 she visited Labrador, 1991 and 1994 she sailed to Greenland, her 26th and 27th crossing of the Arctic Circle.
- 1999 cruise to Newfoundland and Labrador, 2005 again.
- 2007 participation in the Tall Ships Norfolk event in Virginia.
- 2009 cruise to Newfoundland and Labrador.
- deck restoration project in 2015/2016.
- hull restoration project in 2018/2019.
