Portrait of the sailing ship:

Last update: 01 Oct 1998

  • a replica of a late medieval Russian business ship from Northwest Russia. This type of ship was called a "LODJA" and developed by the inhabitans of the Arctic Sea coast who had good trading relations people in the the North and Baltic Sea ports. These ships were built for 400 years.
  • When the young Czar Peter the Great returned from his trip to Western Europe, he ordered all these ships to be burnt, as he wanted ships to be built in the European style from then on.
  • a ship as historically similar as possible was built after considerable research in the archives, i.e. with sails of flax, ropes made from hemp, a hull covered with copper up to the waterline and a square sail on each of the 3 masts.
  • the ship sailed around Scandinavia in 1991 (Petrozavodsk, White Sea-Baltic Canal, the Neva, Lake Ladoga and Petrozavodsk)
  • a trip is planned for 1998 from Russian inland waterways to the Mediterranean.
