  • "Fram" (her name means go ahead) was built in 1892 and designed for extreme navigation in icy waters; her timber sides are up to 80 cm thick.
  • Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen researched the Northern polar region in 1893-96.
  • 1898-1902 mapping of the Canadian arctic region by Norwegian Otto Sverdrup.
  • Roald Amundsen reached the South Pole in 1911 during his expedition 1910-12.
  • a special museum for the "Fram" was created in Oslo at peninsula Bygdoy.
